Plants are prepared for shipping which includes for most a day of hydrating followed by a day to allow plants to dry. Plants like Tillandsia and Vanda orchids need to be completely dry prior to boxing. Shipping damp in a warm dark place increases chance for fungus to develop. Recommend you always do preventative treatment on any plant shipped and then water thoroughly to rehydrate. However Vanilla orchids do start off in the ground where the bean seed pod fell. Your plant can be attached bar root to trellis, section of lattice, hung in vanda hanging basket or placed in pot of sphagnum moss with wood stake to tie vine on.  If you pot plant, place cutting in a 6\" to 8\" pot of sphagnum moss, plant two leaves down into moss. Be sure to keep moist. Remaining plant vine tied to stake or trellis. If you live in South Florida, South Texas, Southern California you can plant at base of tree once roots are established in a pot of sphagnum moss. I find this has better results than just plant cutting directly into ground. However just simply tie Vanilla to trunk of a tree is fine as see in pics plants are not potted, not in the ground, just hang from two 4 x 8 lattice panels.
